Hello

I ahve a Bounty Hunter Commando. Here of late when I turn it on it chaters and the needle
bounce crazy for about a minute. if I turn the sensitivey knob back and forth it will settle down.
It acts like low battery. So I change them to knew! Check to be sure the voltage on the batteries were up also.  IT did not change things.

The detector still works  ok except for it spazing out ever so often. I change locations
and set the disc on the ground  so ther is ajustment to the field.

I am wondering if it has a bad Potentiometer,or may be a weak Capacitor.
any Ideas  Undecided

It sounds to me like either a bad potentiometer (the most likely problem) or a cold solder joint on the board or wiring. Capacitors don't generally act flaky. The go bad and stay bad. The coil might also be the problem so if you have a different one, try that.

Check also for loose connections, connectors and weak wires near where they are soldered or crimped. The plastic cases that batteries mount in can also crack from stress and may need to be replaced. My Minelab needed new plastic battery holders - very inexpensive to repair. The most important aspect of troubleshooting is a good visual inspection. Corrosion will be visible and even a small amount can cause an intermittent connection.

Don't overlook manufacturing flaws. A component that was improperly soldered at the factory can become looser over time and cause a failure like what you are experiencing.

I think your right I used it to day,and it was infrequent. giveing me the same feeling as your sugesstion about the borad and cold joint . Iam going to look at the board closer and see if I can see  it . Right now I do not have a extra coil other then a old junk white detector, and by Junk i mean it has been abuse badly and found at a garage sale for parts.

I did find 12 Cents today Detecting

I just finish looking it over again. and it is clean of any visiual faults,joints, wires, crimps.

I took my jewelers loop and looked real close. At this point am going with the bad pot. I will use it till it quits all to gether then put in a new pot. Or buy a new detector and save this one for parts. Always have to have an excuse for a new toy:)

I do appreciate you know how it conferms my suspitions.

Thanks again will be on here from time to time
 An I always get my 2 cents gets me into trouble
