Fisher Gold Bug SE, Tracker IV

Go Up Go Down

I wanted a cheap(er) bum-around-town MD that I could use and also have available for the wife to use when we both go out.  I looked at all the Bounty Hunters up to about the $300 dollar range, and you know what?  I finally decided on the cheaper $100 Tracker IV.  The reason is, in the lower price range, the frequency and coil size of all the models are the same.  They all have an 8 inch coil and a 6-7 khz frequency range.  The important thing, the Tracker has automatic ground balance adjustment, NOT FIXED.  Some of the more expensive BH's in this price range had FIXED ground balance.  Now some had more bells and whistles, but they all had the same coils, and frequency, which to me says the same depth range, only some of them have their own, built in, computerized ground-balance-on-the-fly, and the others were FIXED.  Bounty Hunter claims that the automatic ground balance can be used in the toughest conditions, even around old gold mines for nugget hunting, with no problems in highly mineralized soils.  So why buy a more expensive machine with a FIXED ground balance?

The tracker IV came in today so I suspended my work on the alien crash site and decided to take the Tracker to the playground and see if I could find some clad.  Lord knows I need the money to continue my work at the crash site.  Anyway I had already read the manual in advance of the machine's arrival, so I popped 2 batteries into the new MD and headed for the tot lots.  I hunted in all three modes, putting her thru the paces.  Right away I found two pennies, which I gave to some little kids who wanted to follow me around despite the babysitters warnings to leave me alone.  I told the boys that the pennies were treasure and not to spend them...they were now good luck pennies.  They promised they would keep them.  I found all the typical junk and a few more pennies and a dime...plenty to keep my research at the crash site up and running.  I thought of GoldDigger 1950 as I swept across the corners of the lot, and got a few solid hits.  Would I too, find a treasure chest?  Not today, the ground was so hard I didn't try but will go back with my shovel/spade later.

Went back to the same playground to continue cleaning the site.  9 out of 10 digs were good aluminum, interupted only once by a stinkin penny.

As I posted in another thread but shoulda posted here:  I now take a nail, a pull tab, a 14k gold ring, a piece of wire, a zinc penny, a nickle, a dime, a quarter, and a bottle top with me in my digger's backpack.  The tracker IV has three modes:  discriminate, all metal, and tones.  I find the tone mode most useful.  I use all the different pieces to calibrate with the discriminate knob in tone mode, what I want to silence out, what will give low tones, and what will give high tones.  This is how I set my machine because the tracker IV does not have any visual clues except a little meter with a needle in it that swings like crazy.  So you go on sound only, so I spread all my little samples out and swing over them, making adjustments on the knobs to wipe out first the nail tones, and then others like the pull tabs if need be.  But caution here, when the tracker IV wipes out the pull tabs, it takes out the nickles and small gold rings with it.  So generally I just squelch out the nails and use the other samples to test the machine with to make sure its working.
