In this, the digital age, I thought I would begin searching the internet for a possible cache or two here in Queensland. Thought too, I would ask for help on this forum as I begin this search.
Here's the first story I have begun research on. Note, as stated this is an armchair search first so all of you can become involved with possible questions to ask, research areas I can look into, keywords that might help me find it, etc... Any and all help will be appreciated and after determining if it is worth looking into maybe an invite or two to go on the actual search.
May 1st 1890 - Queensland
The victim was a french recluse, who after long wanderings had taken up his abode in the vicinity of the Queensland watering place and there led a kind of hermit like existance.His career presented some singular transformations. A gentleman by birth and education, he manifested in the extremity of povertyan independence of spirit and courtliness of manner which betokened good breeding though signs were not wanting that excentricy had developed into aberration of mind.
Ten years ago he came to the Sydney Exhibition as the accredited representative of a large Parisian firm of manufacturing jewelers and after the exhibition was over he traveled to Queensland disposing of his wares. Finally he started in business in Rockhampton and there illness or other predisposing curses clouded his brain. He became possessed of the idea that he had been robbed of all his "

(can not read this word) and after his discharge from the hospital, he walked overland to Brisbane and after many vicissitude settled down in the Sandgate district where he constructed a crude habitation and taught himself, with infanite patience and labor, the art of basket making. He gained a very precarious livelihood at the best but he would accept no assistance. "He was not a begger", he said and ":asked for nothing".
According to the Brisbane Currier, he suffered from the fixed idea that he had been a lifelong object of an ememy's hatred. He had seen his face amid the crowds of Paris, of Melbourne and of Sidney. This was the man who, tracking him from paris to Sydney, thence to Rockhampton, had stolen his goods and wrought his ruin and in his sleep he saw the dreaded features of the enemy who so relentlessly haunted him. He was sure, he said, that he would meet him face to face, once again in life and when he did he would demand his revenge. What foundation there may have been for this monomania, who can tell?
On Good Friday, the discovery of his murder was made. Attention was attracted by the actions of his dog, who rushing out from the undergrowth in a paddock, resisted all attempts of the men who noticed something was wrong, to approach the body. When the police arrived an examination of the remains left no doubt that a murder had been committed. The skull had been battered in and numerous clean cut wounds inflicted by some sharp instrument were also on the scalp, some of which, by the medical testimony, were inflicted after death. There were evident signs of a severe struggle.
Among the theories of the murder is one founded on the idea of "a secret enemy". another on the belief that Dubrocca was a miser who had hoarded wealth and was murdered for the plunder, and the third and more probable one, that he had caught a thief in the act of pilfering his goods and was worsted in the repeated struggles which ensued. The police profess to have a clue, but as yet no results of thier effers have been seen.
