It might be worth digging a little into the history of Windham Connecticut. In the 7 years war also known as the French indian war the village of windham was burnt to the ground by the French Indians. There is a legend that the village people cached there belongs before the attack. It still might be possible to find the 1754 site of the original village?

Here is an old map dated 1766. You will see in the top right hand corner Windham. It will show a church and a fort? This map was made few years after the attack so the orignal village might no be the exact location of the the town was rebuilt. If you can find an earlier map it might help you find where the earlier village was? I suspect the earlier village was destroyed in the early years of the war.
The indian Allies of the French was prone to kill all in the villages and the French had trouble controling their allies. There was a big battle with the British to the north which the french won and raiding parties came south raiding towns and burning them.
There was also a party of prisoners who escaped in mass and fled north in 1754 that made of had a hand in it as well?
Anyway some thing to look into.
