Go Up Go Down

Hello all -  Well the lore of Robert Jones and his find in 1941 has me intrigued. I was walking around Huachuca Canyon today in attempts to find the location of where the Army jacked up the excavation site some 50 years ago. Although I did find some possible spring houses, I was still unable to locate in other markers regarding the possible Spanish gold find. Has anyone been to the site and could you help direct me to the site location?

As of 1981 it seems to still be there, I have not found anything else more recent to indicate other wise at this time.

Well today was another aggravating day in the canyon. Although a couple possible trees were found that match some of the characteristic, but with the vegetation growth and well basically nature doing what nature does there?s no telling if I was in the right spot. Still unsure if the treasure has been found or lost. It?s funny... there?s no way I can dig 36 feet, but the hopes of the reports of Robert Jones being dyslexic makes me want to think everyone was lost when doing the excavations and that the shaft is still intact   if I can find one marker I think I will be satisfied with just finding a piece of history.

Cant help you with current info, but Ive seen that script before, and I think, repeat, think I know what it is... a friend of mine was interested  in this stuff, in the 60s, and showed me the script, which I may be able to find, again.... no promise.

I personally, have no interest, other than reading a good story.

Rattlesnakes are OK, just go prepared. The ones in lower BC are not deadly but can hurt and make you very sick. Hey! I think they are a protected specie, here, doesnt that shock you!

THers should be a protected specie, too, it isnt fair.

Brian,

Thanks for the post. If you could find the script that would be great. Went to the Huachuca museum the other day... They were helpful for the most part. They provided a map that looks like a 1st grader drew lol. From the map it seems like I was near the area just on the wrong side of the mull trail (hiking trail now). As I said before I hope they were off from where the original shaft is and hopefully no earthquakes have compromised the shaft... I don't remember seeing anything about earthquakes in these parts..

Well another day has gone by. So far I have found a screw, cartridge, plastic toy soldier etc... The most interesting find was two possible sinkholes (not sure if drilling can cause sinkholes after the hole is filled in) The two possible sinkholes are approximately four feet apart from each other which validates Huachuca?s museum article on Robert  Jones having to move the claim four feet due not finding anything at the first drill site. Additionally I was able to dig up a time softened rusty metallic object with hundreds of small holes in it. The object had a black layered (1/8 in per layer) type substance around it (paperish feeling), I?m not sure at this time what the object is or if it has anything to do with the dig site during the 70?s. My thought is it might have been part of some machinery from then or I have destroyed some eco irrigation system in the middle of nowhere.

rich7782;

I have a suggestion, if you take a lunch or thermos of coffee, find a place where you can look down on things and while you are lunching... or coffee-ing, just LOOK, at nothing in  particular, just take it in.... its possible, if you do this, you will see interesting things you might want to examine... up close!

Since you posted that link, July 7.... it has taken me 10 days to digest that stuff.... very interesting, this is the kind of stuff I would want to read in January!

Will keep an eye on this!
