A fellow that I work with used to TH and tells me that any buried cache of substantial weight just keeps settling deeper and deeper into the earth. Longer ago it was buried, deeper it's settled and how it would be impossible to find at depths we'd assume it to be. Sue

This is probably true - especially in some of the islands made of sand. Over time -they will probably sink until bedock or clay is reached.

When it comes to gold;

Every Time It Thunders It Sinks Another Inch

Probably holds true for anything heavy.

I think your theory is generally correct, especially in porous ground.

I recently tested, a new machine of mine, on a beach nearby.
This was after some pretty severe storms, I could not detect anything, so to test the machine was working I layed a coin on the surface, sure enough the machine  gave a loud bleep and the dial went full over.

I then dug a hole about a foot deep and placed the coin in, the same bleep and full swing.
Great! the basics of the machine were O.K..................Now to retrieve the coin!!
I knew where it was and how deep, but could I find it, not at one foot, there was water, where it was once dry, I had to dig down or rather scoop through water logged sand, until I was lying flat out on the sand, eventually grabbing the coin as my arm was shoulder deep in the hole.

This probably goes some way to prove your theory Sue! and finding the coin again saved my Embarrasment!!

Cheers Crowsnest....................Don't Laugh!!!

"Don't laugh!!!" Sorry, but visualizing you arm deep frantically trying to find your newly lost coin cracked me up. Thanks for testing the theory <still laughing>. Following a suggestion to plant a coin garden to test my detector, I had almost the reverse happen. Couldn't keep the coins in the ground - nuts were falling and opportunistic squirrels were using my softer dirt areas for burying their harvest and popping out my coins. I'd been so careful measuring depth, IDing them with golf tees, etc.

Beeping at a foot on something freshly planted is impressive - your new machine must be a top of the line.

Sounds like you'd better batten down the hatches.  "Killer storms are set to rip into Britain again next week, weather experts warned. Gales of 80mph and torrential rain will sweep across the country in what meteorologists called ?a direct hit?. . . .  By Saturday the Atlantic system, described as a ?beast? by one forecaster, will see heavy rain and flooding in areas still trying to recover from the devastating impact of November?s and December?s storms."

Think so! There's a treasure cache down south with your name on it. Tropical breeze, rum, coconut trees . . . Sue
