This phenomenon also happens in places that have pronounced very wet seasons followed by very dry seasons. I've seen round-ish rocks break thru the earth over the years. If memory serves me correctly, it's called "the ratchet effect".

Here in the southwest, wind and water erosion can bring things UP!

I have seen flat rock appear to be floating on sand.

Coins will do the same.    Weird Eaaa?
