Go Up Go Down

I am relatively new to treasure hunting. With that said I need your help. I know of an old home that will be demolished soon and have the opportunity to search it for any hidden caches. I have read many posts and stories about where to look in houses for hidden caches. However, I am always stumbling upon new stories that suggest new places to look that I had never even thought of.

So I am writing this in an attempt to get as much info as possible so I do not miss out on any possible locations. The house is a Midwestern 1880's farmhouse. I understand this isn't old in most parts of the world but where I am it is. Since the house doesn't belong to me I can't tear it apart (take it apart board by board), which I probably would if I knew there was no way to preserve it.

So where would YOU look?

Thanks for your input and I'll let you know if I find anything!

Go to the master bedroom or the upstairs bedroom(s). If you can see any landmarks from those room's windows, that's prime location for a cache. People who bury money and valuables like to be able to check on it easily. Check the basement or crawlspace under the house. Use your detector for that. Look under porches and detect where the porches meet the house. Those corners have yielded a great deal of treasure for me over the years. Check inside walls and floors for loose panels or hidden access doors. Check carefully in closets for loose floorboards and look in the ceiling area for manhole entrances to the attic area.

Use your imagination to guess where YOU would hide money or valuables. Good luck and keep us posted on your finds.

What a opportunity!! As previously said, check the framework and the floorboards.  If there is a fireplace in the house, check for any loose bricks that might of possibly been used to take in and out to store a small leather pouch or box to put precious valuables in.

Also, there is a useful tip that includes the outside of the home.  If you have noticed an old clothesline, you better check it.  If it is a pipe, I would check the inside of it.  Get a stick or rod and tie a piece of cloth on it and push it through the pipe.  You don't know, maybe a silver dollar or two might come falling out. Wink Sure is a useful tip for me anyhow.  Hope to hear from you soon!! Smiley

Already some ideas I had not thought of yet, thanks! I was snooping around the property last year and found an old bottle under a rotting board on the front porch. Hopefully a sign of things to come! Also found one out in the the old overgrown garden. Can't wait to get out there again! Keep the suggestions coming!

There actually is a little talk of preserving it but most likely will not happen. If it does get torn down than you better believe I'll be in there ripping those floor boards out  Smiley

Go Up Go Down

My neighbors are going to tear down a old house over 100 years old.  I know them very well, but I can't go into the house and look around. Cry The reason is because of liability.  They don't want me getting injured in the house, because it is old and very unstable.  I got permission to look around after it was tore down though.

Anyways, take some notices on any old or large trees sitting around.  If they have been split, it may be possible that something may be stored inside of the openings.  Just think, where would you hide something valuable? Chances are, they would have the same thinking process as you.  Good luck!! Wink

metal_inspector, thanks for the replies and very good advice. I can think of one very old oak tree that is in the backyard. I'm guessing there's got to be some pocket spills from long ago in the soil around it. That's too bad you can't hunt inside that house. It's really a bummer that nowadays you have to be so careful about getting sued for just about any reason. Hey at least their letting you look around after it's tore down.  Smiley
