Would it be possible to say that MOST caches or hideouts were less than a half mile back in the malpias rocks? Or were they a long ways back up in the channels of the malpias ? Looks like the law would be scared to enter into it as the outlaws knew this and didn't travel far to stach their caches.

we talking the New Mexicon malpais?  if so, whywould the lawmen be anymore scared than the outlaws.   By the way, if you're thinking of hunting that area, just remember most of it is a national monument.   And the lava tubes in the area controlled by the feds are specifically "closed" to all access.
