Hobbyist;

Perhaps my first impression is right: I was thinking (its hard to do, ya know) lava, when nearly cool, can roll over sticks, rocks, man made objects, etc. and leave an impression in the lava, while any carbonacious stuff turns to ash, if there is enough O2. After a while, all the ash, etc., washes away, with rain and stuff, and leaves little or no trace except the shapes in the rock.

A theory, anyway. Moss, you say.

Hobbyist, have you considered the possibility of Japanese Kanji? Maybe that's not a hand (if the impressions there are man-made).
Looks like the green rock is only part of what is left of a larger rock. The texture below the "door" is different from the rest of the rock indicating it has been broken. At least that's how it looks from the image.  Wink

It doesn't seem to resemble kanji or hiragana. Ah well...it's all moot anyways, because nothing was dug up in both spots. That's how it goes...we just fill up the holes and move on to the next site. But thanks to all for the input!

Thank you tabdog. It is now 13 years since I first started hunting. I don't give up easy...and like many others, I'm addicted to it! Smiley Happy hunting to you too!
