Did Coronado, Old West bandits leave a lost treasure in Southwest Kansas?

By LARRY PHILLIPS
Southwest Daily Times

"Thar's gold in them thar hills," might be an old clich? from the early days of this country's history, but usually by the time the masses heard about it, most of the gold had been picked over. Not so around Dodge City.

It seems modern-day treasure hunters have rediscovered the numerous legends of gold, silver and cash buried around the old Fort Dodge site and Dodge City. For decades, treasure hunters have scoured the area around Dodge City searching for buried treasure," according Dodge City Convention and Visitor's Bureau Publicist Audrey Ackerman.

"It has been more of a local thing for people to go out looking for (treasure)," Ackerman said. "Since we've had it on our Web site, we've had a lot more questions about it."

There are numerous legends of buried treasure surrounding the area, according to Ackerman, and when added up, it totals a tidy sum.

"There's supposed to be millions," Ackerman said.

The earliest known legend goes back to the 1540s when Francisco V?zquez de Coronado was exploring the area along what is now the Arkansas River.

"One such legend is of the famous explorer Coronado, who supposedly buried $3 million near the Arkansas River," Ackerman said.

The river is where most of the legends lead, but there was also a place west of Fort Dodge near the Santa Fe Trail where a wagon train was decimated by Indians and one man, Jesus Martinez, was the sole survivor. On his deathbed in later years, he told his son he had buried 21 bags, each containing $1,000 in silver coins, near the site of the massacre.

"Reportedly, a cache of $500,000 of gold and silver bars is buried somewhere along the Arkansas River west of Dodge City," Ackerman said, referring to another legend.

After Dodge City became a rip-roaring cow town in the early 1800s, there was more lore to add to the treasure legends.

"With all the characters that came through Dodge and all the money that was transacted here with cattle drives and things like that, there were people who were not so great that stole a lot of that money and needed a place to bury it so it would not get lost," Ackerman said. "A cave northwest of Dodge, concealed by landslides, is supposedly the hiding place of several outlaw caches.

"A stolen Wells Fargo chest containing an undetermined amount of gold nuggets and dust was reportedly buried a few miles east of Dodge City," Ackerman continued. "And near Ensign, if you're lucky, you could stumble upon $500,000 in Spanish gold that is reportedly buried there."

Remarkably, there is still public land along the Arkansas River where the public has unfettered access.

"Actually, all of it is public access," Ackerman said. "But if it's in the city limits, you can't start digging without some sort of permit. We certainly don't want this to be a thing where we have a bunch of holes in Ford County," she added, with a chuckle.

Anyone wishing to get more information can contact the Dodge City Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 400 West Wyatt Earp Blvd., Dodge City, KS 67801 or call (620) 225-8186 or e-mail audrea@dodgecity.org.

Landowner plats of the county are available at the Ford County Office of Deeds.

"People should get in touch with us or the treasure hunters' groups to find out all the right things to do," Ackerman said. "We have copies of all the legends here, but if it requires digging, they are going to have to contact the city."

Another source of information, according to Ackerman, is Treasure Hunters of Dodge at 810 West Spruce, Dodge City, KS 67801; (620) 227-6713; or e-mail at detector@hotmail.com.

At this time of the year, Ackerman teases that someone may find some extra Christmas cash by treasure hunting, but she believes there's a lot more to the legends than just lore.

"It's kind of interesting," she added.

Seems to me that they only want TH to be there awhile and then probably "get out of Dodge" after staying in their motels, visiting the Long Branch, etc. Chamber of Commerce ploy to get some TH tourista $? Where other places can be a bit fussy about TH . . . . . they probably have special sales on shovels. Smiley Sue

Thanks for another great story Sue. I too am thinking about moving to Dodge. Wink Wink Well - not really but it certainly whets the appetite.

I would love to find the loot.  But I don't live anywhere near it.

Enjoyed that story Sue,
Even if it's a tourism ploy, still sounds intriguing.

Hi Ian, Ah I was poking a bit of fun at the article; but if I'm ever in Dodge City again, I wouldn't mind spending awhile out beeping around since it sounds like they welcome everyone. Lots of old western history there. Sue

Well Sue,
If I was ever near there I'd certainly give it a try myself.
The world and his dog have all heard of Dodge City 'n old Wyatt 'n Billy the kid etc. etc. Clancy bros, or is that a singin' group?
Yep sure is a lot of the old wild west history there, almost certain there's goodies to be found.

Ian & Eileen
