Go Up Go Down

hey all im new here but i am looking for any info on the Lost Doukhobor Ledge in stevens county WA. I have researched the heck out of it and i cant seem to find much. The old timers who where there in 1929 and saw the Silver Ore have all passed away so I have no one to go to on more info. I have tried to find N.L. Barlee who wrote about the legend but unfortuantly he is difficult to find much less contact but i am still working on that. I know there is silver and gold in stevens county there are a TON of mines there. I have located the area I am gonna search when i get back from my military deployment but i cannot seem to find much more info on the subject. So i would be very greatful if anyone can help with info.I am basically gonna wing it and hope to get lucky if i cant find much more info haha. Thanks alot everyone!  Great

The only thing I have ever seen in print on this was by N.L. Barlee and being it is so far out of my roaming range I never did much checking of the facts. If I were you I would check to see when and were the fire took place then try to prove that the names involved were even around at the time.

Thanks for the tip that's what i thought i would do too and i did manage to find when Ray Wiley lived and passed away and it fit perfectly with the time of the fire.  He was a young man during the fire Born in 1909 and the fire was around 1929 so I'm pretty sure that the Mr. Wiley i found is him.  Roy Clark on the other hand is proving a lot harder to track down.

You could look at every mine listed and see if any reference the Lost Doukhobor Ledge.

P.S. Are you sure of the spelling?

Ya its the name of a religious sect from just across the border that had firemen come and help the americans. The guys who found the ore were from this sect so they named it after them. I just wish i could find the family's name

 Hello  JPG,

First of all Thank You for your service!   Great  And welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon.

I remeber the Doukhobors from when I was a kid in the 1950's.  They were a Candadian religious sect that were famously know for protesting various thing.  Many of the protest marches the went on were completely in the nude!

I'm going to look into my file on Washington and see if I can come up with more info for you.  Later!   Clapp

JPG,

I only found one story in my Washington state file.  I was in "Lost Treasure" of July, 2007, page 41 - 42.   It states that the location in Stevens County was, "not far from the Canadian border and due west of the historic town of Northport..." No names for the Doukhobor firefighters but the date was 1929.   29 men hiked into Gold Creek basin and cleared a firebreak.  While they were resting and sleeping during the night the fire jumped their firebreak and threatened thier lives.  They made a run for it and two got separated from the rest.   They finally found the main group and told them they had escaped the fire by getting into a rock slide clearing and spending the rest of the night.  While hiking out one of the men found a vein of galena and broke loose two samples that they carried out with them.   Reportedly the samples assayed at "over 1,000 ounces of silver to the ton." They looked for the rock slide area before they returned home to Canada but couldn't find it.  The two men reportedly returned for years but never found it.

As far as Gold Creek is concerned it "is a small stream that flows into Sheep Creek, which runs into the Columbia River."  The story also mentions that Ray Wiley was a teenager bringing water to the firefighters and he saw the ore samples the men had brought out.

Thats' the basics of the story I found on the "Lost Doukhobor Ledge."

Good luck when you return home!
