I actually live in the area, about 1 hour away. I have done some backpacking in the area but as of yet do not own a GPS. I am shopping for one now.  Still a compass and and map guy.

Also thinking about getting an FCC lisc for shortwave radio for safety purposes.  Currently using CB and GMRS.

Which Way thats good your on the ground there thats more then we have most the time. If you can get to the local news paper and do a search in their archives maybe they have done a story about it in the last 100 years or so. Jones is good about doing them but he has not showed yet .

You guys are good.  I feel a little out matched here but hope to catch up a little with your expertise.  I was going to put off research until winter but every day I get on here and you point something out which sucks me in to a little research.

Excellent point in regards to shipping. I do not know. It would have made more sense, it seems. to ship it around, none the less several articles on the internet discuss this river route as a transit that the French used.  It does seem odd though since Piracy was rare in North America at that time and the French seemed to be worried about the Indians, Brits and settlers inland.  Perhaps the British were a threat at sea?  A quandary to be sure.

As far as New Orleans it was actually settled in the 1600s but did not actually become the capital of Louisiana until 1718

Its proximity is what made me decide to attempt hunting as a hobby. The newspapers are on my ?to do? list.
I just returned from a short stint overseas (actually where I joined this group) and am still getting back in the swing of things with my full time employment. Once I am settled in again I will attempt more diligence with research.  Additionally I am also behind the learning curve for this group. I will try to catch up and carry my own weight

Hello Which-way

You are learning quicker than you imagine. However that learning curve is ongoing and it never stops. Some times its not the destination but the journey to get there matters.

If you could find the names of the Jesuits who was in the region at the time between 1690 and 1749 might be of help. That and the Journals of the Governor of New France at the time.

Even if the gold is only a legend. The chance of finding one of those lost plate is massive historical treasure in itself.

Anyway being out in that wonderful part of the world is a treasure in itself.

I look forward to some photographs of the Indian god Rock when you visit in the spring.

Hardluck

When I can I will start hitting the libraries in Potter county and see what I can find however I would think that any journals ect would be in Montreal as the towns did not exist at the time and the expedition was just passing through.   We may also want to research to see if we can discover what settlements (and where they were) were along the possible route. Some may have grown in to towns and others may have journals or other information in various museums even if the settlements/camps disappeared.

What I am thinking is you need to check the archives of newspaper for the last 100 years and see if a story was published about it. Many a newsman of old would take a small tail or legend and on a slow news week blow it up to fill in space.
If there was that much gold being moved I think there would have been a much bigger force involved, plus as Hardluck pointed out it would have been much easier and faster ti ship it by clipper.

Harluck, you're right.....I'd give this legend a lot more credence if they were coming from Canada.   We know that the French Canadians, including French Catholic clergy were very active exploring the water ways and portages south of the Great Lakes. Of course, the starting point could have gotten messed up as the years passed, especially if the family of any of the participants were among the Arcadians moved from Canada to New Orleans after the British conquered Canads.   Get enough generations removed from the original group and the displaced descendants could just have assumed the family was already in Louisiana at the start of the expedition.
