Thanks, Casca. It was Mordecai that was looking for help. But thats a good map, I've crossed that old trail a number of time in my travels.

Wonder how much gold is in the walls of a gold mine out west?  Looks like with gold prices up it would pay to delve into a mine with permission with a detector.

There is no "typical" mine and no way to answer that question.   It's going to depend on host rock, ore type, mining method and effeciency already employed, etc, etc, etc.

Be safe, and realize you will need help if you do find a mine. Get familiar with mine construction so you dont end up in the bottom of a adit. Also its reported the Spanish would mark up a fake tunnel, at a 45' angle, it was set to fall in and crush you if your dug it out.

I also suspect arsenic and snake venom was used too. Any processed gold you find use gloves. If you see a box all by itself, dont just remove it, use a rope and a safe distance........this is just a mind set and by no means a check list. Old mines are dangerous.

If it spanish, it will be hidden well.

Times were very different in the old days. I've found boxes of dynamite just sitting out on the ground in the weather. Not all death traps are intentional but the can still be deadly if you aren't paying attention.

Like Casca says make sure the mine you are seeing is a mine and not simply an adit (ventilation or drainiage shaft) Plus even if it's not a deathtrap left by the spanish any old tunnel has a good chance of collapsing if you mess around inside. The shoring members (timbers holding up the tunnel) are likely old and rotten and just waiting for a sneeze to drop the roof on you.

The old rotten boards you traverse may cover a verticle shaft of unknown depth. They followed the gold whichever way it went.

Be aware, and be safe.

And that stretch that looks like it's solid rock with a coat of rock dust on it could just as easily be a very deep puddle with a layer of rock dust floating on it.

I hate the crusty crap BA. Scary is what it is.

I have had hand held pinpointers and detector around mines. Being a mine, it is hard rock. Better eat your wheaties if its in a wall.

I keep seeing the same symbol for old mines so if you see this arrangement, you may be close to a mine. It looks like to "ll". good luck.
