Hey Goldminer,

Fact or fiction, huh?  I find it facinating how people go off half cocked after reading a 'treasure' story; no common sense, no personal research, just start your motor and go.

I was raised in Camp Verde, AZ. My Dad and I spent weeks (many) in the Superstitions following the herd. That was in the fifties....before I learned better. Shocked I'm curious what your...research has told you about the 'Dutchman's' gold.

Thanks, Bud

LOL - You're not the only one skeptical about the LDGM. Grin Grin Grin

Bud, I think you have got a good point there.

The rush for holdalways reminds me of the Filipino Mayor who once blew up a vulcano as it was said that some of the Yamashita treasure was located on its bottom ...

... there he went along with half his village when the explosion had the vulcano explode  Undecided

Regards,

Christian

Hey,

I found the 'Dutchman' on a different part of this site. It's rare to find skeptics of the Superstition treasure. My Dad thought it was...sacriligeous of me to question it. As I grew into a man, in the sixties, I actually started thinking instead of reading J. Frank Dobie.

It only took a few days in the dead files of Phoenix's newspapers and the county courthouse to come to the conclusion that the 'Dutchman' did not exist untill he spent a night in a tree, in a storm and caught pneumonia and died.

After his death, the woman who was giving him room/board (been so long ago since I jerked around with this I don't remember her name) found, under his bed, a box of seriously high grade ore. Instantly, the woman and her son were selling maps and giving guided tours.  This is newspaper record, on the spot/at the time!!! I spent many hours giving myself a headache peering at microfilm. The man had NO history before he died....Actually he did. There is (you can still go look at it, I'm sure) a contract between Waltz/Waltzer? and the woman that reads; (paraphrasing) If he could live with her and her son untill he died, she would receive the deed to a really crappy town lot in Phoenix....This, so called 'Lost Mine' owner lived out his last days in a tiny room with a tiny cot over a big box of ore.

Then we get J. Frank Dobie and others who figure the story would sell better if the Peraltas were...... Aw, to heck with it. The records are still there. I'm not talking 'waybills' here. It's in newspaper records and county courthouse records. Anyone can stare at the microfilm and get their own headache. You wouldn't believe how angry my Dad was with me for hunting for the truth.

As for the Superstitions being pretty.....I guess you had to live there. My old man finally admitted that where we lived was a lot like Hell. 'All it needs is a little more water and a better grade of people.'. I'd rather bleed than sweat, so I moved to Oregon and search for things that can be documented.

Bud

That's the problem with a lot of these treasure stories. People want to cherry pick which parts they want to believe -then disregard the rest. These legends should be viewed as a whole and not just based on certain individual "facts". If the whole story  doesn't make sense- it's usually BS.

Hey Goldminer,

When will your 'e-book' be ready for me  Grin and will it have any info on Oregon?

Bud

edit: Will your book show references such as newapaper accounts from people, on the spot, at the time? Will there be letters, diaries written by first party or family with info; where to look for diaries/letters; ie. Historical Soc., Library, or Museum info?

I get a bad taste in my mouth when I get to the end of a 'hot' treasure  story/lead and find no credible reference info that I can check firsthand.....I guess what I'm trying to say is "I don't do legends well"....Too many treasure writers beating me with 'Purple Prose'.

Thanks,  Bud

This site has a large variety of lost treasure tales - some for states, some just in general. Sue
