Go Up Go Down

This debate has been going on around campfires, seaside bars and anywhere 2 or more treasure hunters meet. So lets see what the members have to say.
Most sunken treasure is easier to prove it exist but harder and more expensive to find and recover.
Most buried treasure is hard to document and based on hear say and legends tho can be searched for alone are with a small group, were sunken treasure boats crews etc are a must.
Sunken treasure has a bigger pay off?? but draws a lot of attention
Large buried treasures can be recovered with few people knowing about it. Smaller buried treasures can be recovered by one or two and if done right no one ever hears about it.
Looking forward to everyone input

Seldom

A very clear vote from me: Sunken Treasure! You can discover small caches by chance everywhere in the world. In Europe land treasure dating back to some of the past wars are quite common. However name one guy who became a millionaire by hitting a land site. Let's take it even one step further and name one guy who has found one of the legendary treasure like on Oak Island, the Amber Room etc. ... I can not recall anyone.

I do not doubt that great land treasures exits but chances that someone has allready found them by chance or more important their legitimate owner did retain them at some point of time are much higher than that somebody stumbles acroos a shipwreck in 100 m depth and salvages it.

Sea sites are much more expensive to recover but have a lesser risk of failure if your research is done right.

Regards,

Christian

Yes Chirtian many land treasures were recovered by the owner and many more were recovered and not reported. Getting rich on land treasures is not unheard of but most land hunters can make a good living. I have never had a change to hook up with sunken treasure hunting group, and prefer to work alone anyway. Back in my younger days I would have hired on with Mel Fisher or one of the others if the change came up but it never did.

If I find any very valuable treasure while hunting on somebody else's land, I'm not telling anybody!  Wink

snizzard good point but a better one is if you found it on your own land keep your mouth shut. That's why many treasures we look for are gone they were recovered and not reported. The less you talk the better off you are. You can and will learn a lot here when you figure out how to read between the lines.

Well Global Moderator,

Here is my two cents worth:  Forget the deep sea caches; unless you are spending some one elses dime, and they have alot of dimes!

For the name of Anyone who ever became a millionair finding land caches; one name instantly comes to mind:  KVM. (Karl Von Mueller)  He was a very honest man and his word was his bond.
One has to only read between the lines to LEARN ABOUT CARAVAN DE CASA, and they will KNOW that is where Charles Kenworthy became a millionaire.

There are dozens of small caches being recovered on land every year.  Very seldom are the big sea caches recovered--and once recovered--people and governemnts turn around and sue you to take what you honestly earned through lots of hard work.  An example of this is the "Black Swan".

So it is better to have a bird in hand, than a "Black Swan" stolden from you!!

Barton

I'd have to agree with the assessment that sunken treasures seem much better documented, usually even to the point of cargo manifests. Most of these stories leave no doubt that the treasure (or whatever) was aboard when they went down. Canvasing a search area requires a certain investment in boat, crew, provisions, and equipment.

Land treasures seem much more vague. Of course if they were better documented they would be gone Smiley Usually land treasures require permission to search from owners which can be tricky to obtain. "Excuse me sir may I dig up your back yard because I believe there may be treasure there?" If you are allowed to search, using a gps one can with minimal investment cover an entire area in sections one day or weekend at a time.

For me land hunting is the only alternative expense wise. I be small time.

Go Up Go Down

Hello All, Nice thread " I would start off by saying more land treasures have been found. How did the trreasures end up in the sea? Most were being transported land to land via the sea., and became lost treasures by the act of nature. Storms, wild weather and sea battles...
I would also say at the moment most treasures is still being recoved via land. Im talking about moastly natural treasures here gold, daimonds, Silver ... holes in the ground cover huge areas of land say 3x2 km x 0.5 km depth for a gold mine.
Now for treasure recovery for the small time, one man type thunter id say both are good options under water and land. An earlier artical on this site mentioned shallow water mding, with good results. Of the large type lost treasures id say in this day and age the sea may prove to be a beter prospect
Cool There are also some very large land site options, So maby its a case of wait and see  Wink
