The first thing you need is a story about a cache. Just meandering around the place might produce one but the best way is to find it in writing somehow first. Your local historical society will probably have information on families that lived in the area in the good old days. I once located a family's cache from an old diary entry that was printed in a women's magazine. An entry was made by a little girl who was so happy to have a new dress and noted it in her diary. Seems daddy had made a relatively large amount of money and hid most of it somewhere on the family property. With the help and permission of the family, I located it. A lead to a cache can be the smallest mention just like that one. Keep your imagination open when you read those old stories from when the town was young.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Take notes, lots and lots of notes.   Cache hunting is definitely detective work (unless you like relying on blind luck in which case it isn't "hunting")
