Go Up Go Down

My wife had just hung up the phone and says to me

Wanna move out west?
One of my her kinfolk had bought a ranch and needed help getting it up and running
Sure says I

Well the oilpatch had all but dryed up and there was no work so we hitched up the trailer loaded the dog in the back
of the pickup and headed out west
When we got there ranch life had not changed much (little or no pay) so I found a part-time delivery job in a nearby town
One day got an order way outside of town with very explicit directions
Well I got to the spot on the road where it said to turn and started down this narrow trail
Finally got to the site and there were several vehicles and about a half dozen people there
Some guy walks out of what looked like a cave at the bottom of a cliff and takes the delivery
Out of curiosity I just had to ask what they were building
He then informs me they were an archaeology team from a university in another state
So I asked if they were digging native american relics or what
Oh no its an old spanish mine he says

      Shocked     Really      Shocked

Curiosity on ultra high I asked how a university in another state would know of a mine way out here
Turns out they had documents of the old spanish mine in this area and the university agreed to fund the dig

If they could find it

Well I asked did you have any trouble finding it
He laughed and started the story
There is a small town several miles away that they were using as a base point in their search
Not much more than a store/postoffice very few people in the area
Every day they met at the town and go from there in a different direction looking for this mine
He never said how long they looked but one day out of frustration someone popped off to the locals that were there and said
Hey folks we are looking for an old spanish mine in the area anybody seen one?
One of the locals stood up and said
La Mina? Si  We know of a mine near here
Come we show you The Mine
Everybody jumps in their pickups and cars and goes tearing down the road with the team in hot pursuit
Now how hard was that

Yes it can be surprising what people will tell you about, or the knowlage that they may have.
Especially true with the local people of an area if you want to know about the history or a pointer in the right direction.

Yep, and they've also been known to send them out on wild goose chases (a la Coronado and the Seven Cities of Gold....always a bit further that way).   It can all be very entertaining (or very profitable depending upon which group you hook up with)
