Go Up Go Down

There is a sunken stagecoach in Lake Tahoe that--according to a 20-year-old article I found--has not yet been plundered.

According to the article (Treasures of California, Parade Magazine, 1982), the stagecoach was being transported across the lake on a barge when large swells on the lake washed it overboard.  The stagecoach was supposedly transporting a gold payroll.

Divers report that the stagecoach is resting on a ledge about 120 feet underwater, the extreme cold and depth makes lingering around the sunken coach problematic. Divers report that there is a small coffin inside the coach, but to date, no one has opened it to see what is inside.

I sure hope it's not me. If it is, nobody tells me. OK?

Good story, mate. Sounds like a museum quality preservation in progress.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I wanted to verify the authenticity of this story. Do you have a copy of the article? What is the Author's name? Do you have any other information regarding this claim?

According to the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, in the 1850s, a stagecoach full of gold was being barged across the lake. A wind came up suddenly, the lake turned violent and the stagecoach was pitched into the lake, sunk and never recovered.

If your interested in this legend contact the Historical Society and see what info they have. Most big library's have Parade Magazine in their archives so getting a copy of story should not be to hard.

I am going to stop in to talk to the historical society this weekend(only open on Saturdays). I did a little bit of searching online and came up with little discussion of this story. the links below are the most I could come up with.

I am in process of trying to locate the guy in the newspaper article to talk to him, but no luck so far. I know 160 years+ is a long time for paper records to disappear, but I would think there would be a paper trail somewhere accounting for a loss like that. I would imagine whatever business was getting the payroll would take the loss or claim it on insurance?? Have you ever researched legends like this?

100"s if not 1000's thats what we do, and some of us have been at it for over 40 years so having 1000's of files on 1000's of treasures is not that uncommon. Research is the key to being a successful treasure hunter, I have had stories for 20 plus years before a recovery was mad. Why? Waiting on that one piece of info which sometime takes years to dig up. All you can do is keep pulling at threads till everything falls into place.

If the guy is still around he probably will not give you much info if he is still working the project. Most play it close to the vest till they have abandon the project or made a recovery.
