Larry, I don't do the park thing..I am only interested in old finds..I like the Military stuff but not much around me.

So I have to hit areas far from where I live.

Go Up Go Down

Mornin'

I neglected to mention to you that I live in a fairly big city up here. Ottawa doesn't have many battlefields that I know of or they are probably paved over if there were any. Hey Dean, I've found a fair number of oldish coins and artifacts (military buttons,3 ringers, bridge tokens) in parks, highschool grounds, and old picnic groves, that prove that old ground, produces old stuff and that you DON'T have to travel very far to find some old turf if you know what to look for. There lies the rub boys. Wink You've got to get yourself into scrutinizing the ground you are hunting, looking for signs of age.

The first thing I look for is trees close by. What kind are they? Maples? Poplar? Spruce? How thick through the trunk are they? Once you start looking at the greenery and getting to know different trees, you'll know that Oak and Maple trees, about 24-48 inches thick at their bases are pretty freakin' old! Poplars a foot or more thick are young and can obliterat an old site in 20 to 50 years. Next, are there any roots sticking out of the ground, around those trees? Perhaps some of them, upon closer inspection, appear to be worn smooth, from all the foot traffic they've undergone over the last, who knows how many years.  Dandelions and other old weeds can clue me in to aged ground as well. If there's no weeds, or just nice green lawns, I usually pass it up as re-done ground and head for weedier (older, undisturbed) ground. There are a lot of things along these lines that can open your eyes up to very productive TH'ing ground close by, once you start wrapping your brain around them. Wink

Outback man, you are going to love Carson's book! I'll bet you twenty bucks that you will learn about many neat things you didn't know about or that you have never used before. Cool After you've read this powerful little bible, you'll go back to places you thought you scoped pretty good before, and find that you barely scratched the surface. As I've stated in another post somewhere, what you hunt with, is not as important as where you hunt and how you hunt. Glenn delves into little things, that lots of other folks just don't notice and tells us his most productive observations and findings in a very easy to follow manner.  Smiley

Have a good one...

LB

The best place to find Military bits are not battlefields, but the camp sites.
You get better finds there and not as much "junk"

I know of a War of 1812 supply area here in Whitby, but it was built over 5 years ago..before I found out.

Not far from me is a small WW1 training area...found out about it early this year...they built a bridge on the spot last fall!!
However there was a POW camp not far from me..the buildings are all still there as it is a private school...can't get permission to hunt it..but I have hunted the field across the road where the Guards had their barracks..found 3 German badges there and some other stuff.

I am at my local archives a lot...I know the guy that runs it and he helps out with some local sites.

Research is the key to hunting sites...and I have many file folders full.
Just don't get out to much.

Dean

I heard in Canada you carry a blowtorch to melt the ground before you dig up your find
