Go Up Go Down

My electronic gadgets (cellphones, tablet, digicams/camcorders, walkman, gps etc)  have passed thru airport x-ray scanners many times over the years without any damage or loss of data. However recently a friend had major problems after going thru airport security. Maybe some electronic boffin can shed some light onto this? Here are the details:

Her 4-day old phone was in her handbag when it went thru the x-ray machine. It was working fine prior to that. After coming out the other end, the capacitive touchscreen did not respond, the microSD card in the phone was not recognized by phone or computer, and when she tried to perform a factory reset to the phone (running Android Gingerbread), an error message popped up saying kernel32.dll could not be found.

There is a walk-thru metal detector placed next to the x-ray machine, with about 6 inches of space between them. In the past, my gadgets and I have been thru the same airport's x-ray machine and metal detector respectively without incident.

The cellphone was inspected by a technician who said the digitizer and micro SD card was dead, but there was no damage to the mainboard components. Since then the kernel and ROM of the phone has since been flashed to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and works well.

Now I know from personal experience that x-rays do not harm electronic devices. Any ideas for possible causes of such catastrophic failures of the touchscreen and micro SD card? Is it possible that these x-ray machines are capable of generating a strong-enough electromagnetic pulse to cause such damage if they're set to higher x-ray power, or some leakage from the neighboring walk-thru metal detector got thru to the phone just as it was being x-rayed? I'm boggled. There is also small possibility that the components decided to fail just at that time and the phone is a lemon....but that seems too much of a coincidence. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Now I know from personal experience that x-rays do not harm electronic devices.!!!!

LOL!     That would depend on the power now wouldn't it.    They do in Fact Destroy some Components.

Guess you never tried to pass Photo graphic film through one?

Walmart uses RFID Stanchens going out the door to find unpaid tags.

Did you know the power coming from them is enough to kill the Pet Fish leaving the store?  They Quit selling fish!

What is it doing to You?

Here in Deming, the Library used a system like that on the Video tapes.

Every Tape you checked out the first 5 minutes had flashing Blank spots on the tape .

I figured it out and told them what was going on. Every time they scanned the Tape they was erasing that side of the tape exposed to the RFID Reader.

They insisted that that was not the problem.

After who know how many tapes got messed up they figured out it was the problem and went to a Optical reader in place of the RFID type.

Go Figure.

I dunno what power level airport x-ray scanners run at...but I never lost any  electronic device from being scanned. So are you saying that at high power levels, an x-ray could damage cellphones?

Sigh...that's very bad news for frequent travelers with newer devices. I guess the best I can tell her is to request for manual security inspection of the phone.

I would never put a lap top through one for sure.

It may not kill it straight away but it may in the long run.

Been about 2 decades since I last used film, but I know how you feel. And here i was thinking that those x-ray machines were also film-safe.

That trip was 20ish years ago, but we used film right up until a few years ago in my house.   I'm not much of a picture taking person, my ex wife did all that, so when she left i decided to get a digital camera...i still don't take many pics, but i sure like the fact i don't need to wait for the pics to be processed Smiley
