Go Up Go Down

Okay, I have a serious question about aluminum recovery. When we first moved here to Texas from California, we noticed that we could buy recycled aluminum in big bales for less than a third of what we could sell it for in California. We figured we could buy several bales, take them to Cali and sell them at a profit and it would pay for the trip back home to see the family. I went so far as to call the commerce authority to see if it would be legal and they couldnt see any reason why we couldnt do it. Then I called a recycle center in California to make sure they would buy it there. They said that at least some of the cans had to have California redemption stamped on them.  Are there people who do this successfully without issues? Transfer aluminum across state lines to buy/sell at a profit?

Debo I split your post out and started a new thread where the answers will not be lost in the nonsense of that thread.

This is a good question and hopefully will generate some interesting info. Do you know how much difference's there is in the price? If its only a few cents per pound you would need to move 1000's of pounds just to brake even.

I havent looked into it lately but back when we were thinking about doing something like this it was approx .25/lb to buy it in Texas and California was paying .75/lb (sometimes there were coupons in the paper for 1.-1.25/lb). The bales were 400-600 lbs and we figured we could fit 8-10 of them on our truck and trailer. That adds up! After talking to the recycle folks in California, I wondered if we could just drink a twelve pack of California cokes and just stick them in with the bales...just to make it right. If they need the aluminum, I dont think they would care where it came from. But we never did try to do this and I couldnt say for sure if it would work out but it might be worth a try....

If there is a 50 cent difference in the price there is something we are not seeing. Heck even your small roadside buyers who only buy and compact 5000 pounds a week would be holding on to it till they had a 18 wheeler load and haul it into Calif.

OH WOW...I guess that answers my question! And I guess we weren't the only ones with that idea years ago. From all the information I got...it wasnt illegal back then. I wonder if they have a price for scrap aluminum that is not CRV (non-beverage) and a price for CRV. And I wonder if it would be legal if they paid you at the non-CRV price. It probably wouldnt be worth the trouble if you had to buy the bales in texas (the purchase price is probably a lot higher than the .35/lb selling price) and then sell it in California at the lower, non-CRV price. It might just be a few cents profit per pound. I think I'll just keep my night job....it was just a thought....

I know a guy that lives here in NM winter and MA summer times.   Massachusetts pay 5 or 10 cents for a beer can.

He collects them while here and takes his truck and trailer there loaded up.

Says it pays his Gas and then some.

They have to be uncrushed.     The Grocery stores there have machines you load them in and it spits out a receipt that can be cashed in at the counter.

Do the cans in Mass have to be marked Mass redemption value? If not, then that might be the place to recycle them. I will definitely have to do more research if we were to try to do this. I would have to make sure that we weren't violating any state/interstate laws. It seems like they would encourage/reward people who are trying to make a little money recycling since it helps reduce the trash going into the landfills. It makes sense...

I think they do.   But it seems all the Butt Washer cans they drink here are. Cool

I think they can't be crushes so the machine can read the Bar Code.

In days gone by, when I was involved in fund raising for scouts, little league and so forth, the crushed can was king. Then, because it was all by the pound, some guys would fill a dozen or so cans with sand and tape the top shut to get more weight. Naturally, when they got caught at it, the line at the recycling center would stop dead until they were dealt with. Then, they came up with a bounce test for cans. The cans would travel down a conveyor belt where a magnet would pick up that rare steel can and if a can didn't bounce, it was scooped off and rejected.

As was pointed out in the Washington Post article, the recycling industry was and is rife with scams and scammers.
