Good article  poptop know this would be an interesting topic.

the recycling industry was and is rife with scams and scammers.

At the bottom of the Artical PoPtop posted is some info.

This must be how the guy I know gets away with it.

"Massachusetts studied the issue but found potential solutions "infeasible or prohibitively expensive," said Joe Ferson, spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Because of regional distribution patterns, cans sold in non-deposit states often have a deposit stamp on the lid anyway. That makes it tough to stop people from placing out-of-state containers in stores' machines. It may not be illegal to return those cans in some states. "

Yea I see the loophole there. Some cans and bottles here in Texas have the 5 cent deposit thing on them in some states. If I buy here there is no deposit but can haul them to a state where there is a deposit and redeem them, yea but its still wrong the deposit was never paid.

As he lives in both states it pays for gas going back to Mass.   It would not be a money maker doing the round trip.

I can get twice the price for my aluminum driving to El Paso from here.   With gas being the way it is even that does not pay unless I had a need to go anyways.
