Lots of them !  Crazy eaa?   I put off building a serious Linear   Amp  because of the cost.

Hey, Mud, what transistor costs that much?

That was a generic statement. I was thinking of the current 50V, high power mosfets in the 200-300 watt class at 30MHz. Of course the higher the frequency you go the prices does the same! The MRF150 is an N-Channel
Enhancement-Mode MOS BroadbandRF Power Transistor Designed for 2.0 to 150 MHz older though..... I see the VRF2933 - Transistor RF MOSFET N-CH 170V 40A 5-Pin Style M-177 - Microsemi being used in a parallel scheme for 1200 watts RF out. They are around $70.

What started this is the tuner I am debating upgrading has an input designed for PI output tube amps and the old tube PI circuits could work fine into various impedances at different frequencies. The tuner just has a fixed single coil input. To use the tuner with a solid state transmitter one would be better to redesign the tuner front end to match the somewhat ridged 50 ohm impedance.

I was asking because I believed you were implying that some of the transistors used in metal detectors were that costly. My bad.

Hey. Maybe your on to something there GD, grin. Homefire, toss in a 200 Watt MOSFET ahead of the coil on your next project!  Wink

We can use the flux capacitor from the DeLorean for power.

The Flux Inductor  has advantages over the Flux Capacitor.  You can use the Fly Back to extend battery life and when you get to your destination your still wearing clothes.   Grin
