Go Up Go Down

We had an earthquake down this way a couple of weeks back!!  Shocked
magnitude 7.1  it messed things up quite a bit. amazingly there were no deaths, and
you could count the casualties on your fingers.
it hit at 4.30 am so most people were asleep in bed. lots of property damage, buildings down, roads wrecked, pipes and power damage but 2 weeks on and the city is about 85% back to normal.
still a lot to be done in the whole region, some of the smaller towns have been severely damaged and might never be rebuilt. some areas of the city might have to be torn down and rebuilt and some suburbs as well.
our house survived with some cosmetic damage and a couple of breakages, others a few streets away have been condemned. there was a lot of liquefaction throughout the region which is where the shaking causes the ground water to get forced up bringing silt and mud with it. it also makes things like drains and sewers "float" in the ground and break, things like underground tanks, like at gas stations literally popped out of the ground lifting parking lots with them.
it's a hell of a thing to have to go through but we are so lucky to be alive.
the aftershocks are still keeping us on edge a bit, had nearly 800 of them now, but they are diminishing in frequency and magnitude.
summer is on the way and things are getting back to "normal" slowly.
i just wanted to let you know for no other reason than to talk about it. seems that every now and then you need to just talk about it, most people in this city do too. it helps as well.
thanks for letting me waffle on, i'm off to bed now i can usually get a full night now, unlike the first week or so where shocks kept you awake, although i was given a rude wakeup this morning with a 4.5 shake.
take care and good hunting
JJ

Thanks for the firsthand report, JJ. I thought about forum members when that powerful quake happened, but realized power was down, immediate concerns, etc would keep members from reporting and letting us know how they were. News stories let us know that, fortunately, that casualties were very low even though properties had a lot of damage. Those aftershakes will keep happening as the planet settles down, but it's not good on your nerves. Please continue posting about progress, what's happening, etc. if you feel like it. Even though you're miles and miles away, we care as much as if you were just down the road. Sue

Hey, jamjars, glad everyone is ok.....not sure how much of the area you live in is newer construction versus early 20th century and late 19th century construction, but as big of a pain in the posterior as they often seem, there's definitely something to be said about modern construction codes and regulations when it comes to increasing survivability of earthquakes and other frequent natural disasters.

(and just think how many folks'll want you to help find the odd lost trinket once things settle down and life begins to get back to normal).

Go Up Go Down

the age of the building didn't seem to matter, although the old brick ones built the early part of last century fared the worst, but new houses less than 10 years old have been condemned because the ground they were built on suffered liquefaction and the slab subsided and cracked, and others just fell apart because faults opened up under them.

some pics..

{alt}
this is a road that is over the main fault that let go on the morning of the big one, it doesn't quite line up properly anymore!!

{alt}
an adjacent paddock with a fence that shows the movement

these are about 40km from the city

{alt}
one of many old brick buildings in the city

{alt}
another

{alt}
liquefaction a couple of blocks from home

{alt}
liquefaction just around the corner from home

{alt}
the gas station down the road, the tanks floated!!

more shocks last night, three big ones 3.8, 4.1, 4.0 within 10 mins of each other and 5-7 Km deep but one was centred under the city and the others out the eastern suburbs where we are, F@rk did we shake!!

take care

JJ

Just read the other day that there had been around 300 quakes over 3.5. The pictures of the aftermath were interesting - esp the liquefaction as, it often gets mentioned, but photos are usually of the damage to buildings. Sue

 Shocked
we got the tenth biggest aftershock since the main quake today, it was 5.02 magnitude.
we have now had 2061 aftershocks since the big one on sept 4th.
i don't know why they call them aftershocks as they are all earthquakes in there own right i guess. the house is starting to show the effects of all this shaking now, getting cracks n the walls where the plastered joins are parting.
fortunately we have home insurance and the earthquake commission will pay out the first $140,000 before your own insurance company start paying, so as long as there isn't anything majorly structural wrong we will just need some plastering and redecorating.
we still have got off lightly compared to others who have to demolish and start again.

Go Up Go Down

here we go again   Shocked

6.3 this time, shallower and close to the city.
the place is screwed BIGTIME!!!
the center city and to the north and east of it are severely damaged

and lots of after shocks like the one we had right now!!   Thumbs Down

no power or water or phone at home, typing this at the office in the south of the city
there is power and phone but no water. the place is still standing but everything got tipped off the shelves, home was 10 times worse .. 70% of the contents wrecked, but house still upright.
it's not possible to get out and about to take pics to show you as most of
the roads are badly damaged and the city is cordoned off.
seems to be plenty of pictures on line though.

so... anyone want to buy a cheap house? if i could sell that i'd be out of here
go buy a nice place near a beach full of diamond rings

catch ya later

cheers,
JJ
