Go Up Go Down

I would like to know how many of the prospectors (men and women) carry a side arm when prospecting?  Also, would like to know how many out there actually have a Concealed Gun Carry license/permit?  I am getting my CCW permit here shortly, I have to go to classes and a shooting range with someone watching and telling me how to handle my gun.  This way, I won't have to put up with the idiots out there that are in Law Enforcement giving me bull crap about carrying a weapon.  I just want to say it sure is getting expensive to carry a weapon for your own protection any more the classes and a good weapon will set you back a few bucks.  The Laws are changing everywhere and there are a lot of crazy people out there that will try and take advantage of a person out in the wilderness with nothing to protect themselves with. I am not one to just go out and shoot up the land or destroy trees, signs, or anything, just like to have the good feeling of having a weapon when actually needed.  It is our right to carry a weapon, and safety is a big responsibility.

I carry concealed when I can and exposed when way off the grid. My detector is a valuable asset to someone who is starving.

You don't sound like someone brought up around fire arms.

Here there just part of life , another tool.

Yes I carry when out .

I carry in the open.

Sorta funny how people walking up on you in the boonies extend respect when they notice.

Down here on the Border, we have some really Nasty folks that like to Brake, Take and just mess up your toys if they think they can get away with it or Need it.

Critter are the least of your worries.   LOL

In Canada, we have some pretty strict laws and some some very lame policies regarding restricted and unrestricted fire arms.  If I could carry with out getting in trouble, I would Smiley  Here is a quick link for the gun carry laws in a few countries -

On a similar topic, what kind of sidearm are you bringing out with you?

I carry open, like Homes says keeps everyone on their best behavior. Never had an issue in the woods yet (with people) trying to keep it that way.
.44 single action revolver 95% of the time .357 double action otherwise.

Nice pieces Idaho Jones, you get a chance to get to the range with them often?

Go Up Go Down

Homefire, I used to have a few weapons here at the house, had to get rid of them because my wife and I became Guardians of our nephew.  He was in the system to be adopted and we took him into our home.  One of the requirements of the state was that we were not allowed to have any fire arms in the home.  I hated getting rid of my guns at the time.  It has been 15 years now and the kid is about to go to college.  I can have my weapons now and have to buy all new toys/tools for me.  In the last couple of weeks I have purchased another 30-30, Ruger SR9 9mm and was given a Jennings model 59 9mm, also got an old German 32 that belonged to my father-in-law that was in a safe.  So getting my collection back. Smiley Yes, I grew up with guns in the house and all loaded all the time. The gun that I miss the most that I used to have was a S&W .357 8" barrel 6 shot double action all Nickle plated with Pearl handles I had in a western hip holster tied to my leg.  That is the gun I used to wear when prospecting back 20 years ago. I should have kept it in the safe but got a good price when I sold the gun to a gun shop locally. Cry  I just figured that since they are changing all the gun laws, I would get my CCW permit so that I can carry all the time since I am on the road so much and won't have to worry about having a loaded gun in the car/truck all the time. :Smiley  The classes that are required now, 8hrs of class time and 4hrs of range time with an instructor, two sets of finger prints for the locals and a set for the FBI. Most classes charge anywhere from $150-$200 and is done in one week end. When I went in to get the Ruger 9mm from the store, they told me that it would take an hour to 8 hours to get the paperwork done (back ground check) when they put in the information, they were surprised that all came back clear within 5 minutes. Shocked   Grin  Last week when I went to the Oro Grande Mountains, the State Police and Forest Rangers turned me away from going to the place I wanted to prospect.  It turned out that a bunch of college kids were in the area having a party (Beer) and someone got shot. So my trip was a dead end.  But that is the area that I wanted you to go also to see how many nuggets we might pick up.  Maybe next time I go, you can meet me and I will take you to the place and we both can pull up a load of nuggets. Grin

I used to go to the range a lot CCSportsdad, since there is a nice free outdoor range about 3 miles from my house. I could also shoot out in the back yard if I wanted but it tends to be kinda noisy for the critters. I reload my ammo to keep the cost down but it's still a little spendy. I've been looking at picking up some black powder arms to play with. You can shoot fast as you want all day and it's still less than a box of .44s  Grin

Danny, that's a tough deal but kudos to you for doing a good thing for your nephew.  Smiley

.22 is a good thing.    .22 can do things people just don't realize.

I've killed tree dogs that were more then 80lbs with a single shot.

Heart Lung shots with a Ruger Mark ii  pistol twice and once with my kids mini Henry single shot rifle.

I just carry a Mark ll Ruger  .22 10 shot pistol.

First two are snake shot the rest are Stingers.

Ok, it's not a Get through Armor kinda pistol but it sure makes people duck and cover and run away.

Loud, 10 shots as fast as you can pull the trigger and most accurate.

If   a 400lb Black Bear took one in the for head 60ft away and kept coming I would be more then suprized.

You can kill a 1200lb Elk with a .22 pistol to the head.  I've seen it done.

No it was not Sniping.   The guy was a game warden in AZ and took it down because it was tangled in a fence.   He did it from 40 Ft away with a .22 of mine.

All he had with him was a .357 6" And did not want the Report to make it to the Camp Ground just up the hill.
