I have a good lightweight Sony for general purpose but it doesn't get a good close up shot for coins, etc.  I don't want to spend a lot of money for a limited purpose camera. I will check with the local (France) camera shops but thought I would ask if anyone on this forum has experience or recommendations on a good close up camera (with zoom capabilities) that is inexpensive. I have tried to take photos with the help of a magnifying glass but it doesn't work. My present camera only has a 3x zoom. Any rec's as to what type of zoom is needed for this type of close up work?? Its not a zoom you need for close up work, its a good macro function, i.e. the function to focus very close
Most cheap compact cameras will focus around 10-15cm, some like the Panasonic DMC-FP8 focus at 5cm so you can get really close
Look for a slightly older model, they are often reduced to sell

The macro function is the tulip icon on most mid and high end cameras. Good thing to have for detail pictures on small things. For coins I have good results with my scanner might try that before you invest in a new camera

I've tried my scanner but it only comes out as a dark circle.. Is there something I may be doing wrong?  I got rid of an old 35 mm camera that had a macro several years ago (pre-digital). I guess I will either get an inexpensive one or forget taking photos of my older coins. Coloma Gold
