Hi All, I'm not one to get onto boring subjects, but I got a surprising result from my specialist yesterday one I never expected so I thought I would share it with you in case anyone has had these operations...He said I have a very rapid bone degeneration and I will have my first knee replacement in Dec and the second in January, I did tell him at that time about my 30+ years detecting he told me that those days are over....I would only exacerbate the problem by digging holes..
However I am still going out till early Dec as it doesn't matter what I do right now..........I was going to say "sucks to be me" but I wont,  Angry............HH...Johnnn

One of my now passed on friends had a double replacement and used construction worker knee pads (the armored kind) to dig. Worth a try, mate. I wish you the best outcome possible, John.

That just sucks, Johnnn!  I won't go so far as to say "it sucks to be you," but it sucks to be in your position right now.  Knowing me I would get the knees healed up and working, then go out detecting and digging anyway.  Using those construction kneepads like GD's friend would help, too.  Wish you the best with your operations!

FYI, John, the kind he used were the ones that had a hard shell outside and a supporting web like harness inside. Not cheap but they gave him back his ability to kneel. He used them for gardening too. And fishing. We spent more time fishing than we did detecting in his last few months. I miss him, now that I'm talking about him.

Not all of us will go through this but some have or will sooner or later.
I too will have this surgery within a few more years.
Medication has helped for the past few years but it has it's limitations.
It sux getting old period.
I have experienced a diminished capacity to do a lot of things that was more than just a hobby but a passion.
Walking for miles while looking for artifacts or fossils gone.
If I can not drive right up to the area of interest I can not go, period.
There are other areas of our bodies that will eventually fail us , hands hips ankles shoulders ......
It sux getting old. Wise

That's not good Johnnn but I was told some thirty years ago by my bone sergeant that I would be paralysed in the wrist in ten years time well it's been 30 odd and it works 100%. I take everything that a doctor tells me like a pinch of salt. It's like GD said get the knee pads and enjoy life and your hobby to the best of your ability.

Best regards
Xavier
