Just a little idea I use, although I may teaching granny to suck the proverbial. The blade on my spade is 9 inches long, (230 mm), so I filed a small groove at 10", (255mm) - 12", (305mm) - 14" (355mm) - 16" (405mm) - 18" (460mm) on the front of the metal part which is 20" (510mm) long. Now when I dig a deep hole I can check how deep the artefact was. I put the metric in for those who do not use imperial. Best wishes to you all. Tony

Go Up Go Down

today while exploring the area that once used to be an old mining town in the 1800's here in Utah.  well, i found an area where they pitted their trash.  while doing a little digging i found that the garbage area in fact was layered as are alot of history'e time frames.  i would dig a couple inches and find something and then dig a little lower and find something, but everrything i found was almost perfectly in line with the other items found at the same depth.  i also found large pockets that weren't filled with dirt and alot of items were easily accessible through these "air pockets" however i would have loved to use yur measurement of depth to catolog what was found where and at what depth for future digging.  awesome idea, i appreciate it.
