Go Up Go Down

Hi all,

not sure where this fits, so i put it here -- if there's a better forum for this, please feel free to move it.

My thoughts here are on Hazards whilst detecting:

Anyone else every find the following things?

- Buried live wires ( I dug these up in a soccer field...I think they power the lights...luckily, I understood what theywere quickly and re-buried them)
- Drug users' needles  ( I haven't found any myself yet, but in some parks I hunt, I see them all the time)

any ideas on these or other hazards?

Being down 30 miles from the Mexican/United States Border we have folks running the line all the time down here.

Some of those people will Take what ever they can.

Your Equipment.

Your Truck.

Your Food and Water.

Even your life if you run across the wrong ones.

Being in a lower population rural area I haven't really run into things like users needles.  Buried electrical wires could alway be a hazard, but I have never dug any up.

In the last few years one of the biggest hazards becoming a problem in the mountains of northeastern Oregon have been marijuana growers!  In the last year, 2 or 3 huge pot plantations have been discovered and destroyed by authorites just in a three county area alone!  Lots of weaponry and ammo seized and the forest trashed by the growers.  They have been way off the beaten path and were found mostly by hunters who got out of the area fast and notified authorities immediately.  The growers have almost all been from Mexico and Central America, raising millions of dollars worth of pot!

If you stumbled into one of these camps while the growers were there, you would be in Major Trouble!  They would probably just as soon kill you and bury your body where it would never be found.

Personally the biggest hazards I have encountered have been broken glass, sharp rusted metal cans, etc., and nails and blades.  Everyday things of that sort.  Poisonous critters, bugs, spiders and snakes can also be hazards, even bees, if you're not careful!

Here in the Pacific NW in Western Washington, you have to keep an eye out for Stinging Nettles.
When digging, especially at the edges of wooded areas, burrowing yellow jacket wasps can be a
hazard, I know, one stung me 9 times before I was able to dislodge the little bugger from under
my long sleeve shirt at the wrist.  Not a nice find.  HH Robroy59

You might not think about it but mooshineers is a real threat in these northeast Tennessee hills. I have a carry permit and do carry when I am in locations that may tend to the bad side. Round About

wb4rav  - u are correct about the moonshiners even here in Middle TN. same with the Marijuana Growers, and the portable meth labs etc. If you think you are close to area's like these be on the look out for "Fish Hooks" that hang from the trees at eye level etc. the bad guy's like to leave traps every where, for the police etc, to run into. once you see someone with the fish hook in the eye, you will never forget it.

And Rattle Snakes and copper heads were Bad this last year even killed a couple in our yard and driveway , glass and metal shards etc are also things to look for. if you find a weapon on the surface call the police don't pick it up. let the authorities handle it.
