Looks like you already have quite a nice setup Carl, would it not be possible for the two of you to camp out there for a few days instead of coming and going all the time, you would save a lot of time.

Yes, we have considered that. The weather is too hot right now. Just waiting for a little cooler weather.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

What I would do if I were you is start very early in the morning collecting material then once it starts to get hot clean it then in the afternoon collect more material (Just an idea)

I can see the fiasco in my head mate LOL I use to be a diamond diver up on the west coast in South Africa and temperature could rise to 40c in the shade so we also had to make plans

That sounds exciting. Though I am a little to old now to venture into that I would sure like to hear about it.

Come to think of it we have a park in NY state where you can dig for diamonds. Put down a small fee and you keep all the diamonds you find. Some very valuable diamonds have been pulled out of there. Maybe not to old after all. Wink

Basically it the same as gold dredging, we go down with an 8 inch pipe and suck up all the gravel that's at the bottom until we hit bed rock, sometimes we hit conglomerate so we brake it up as it can be rich in diamond.

I believe I saw an episode on the discovery channel about that. I think in that particular incidence they were dredging for gold, but yes you can compare it to dredging for gold. What I really would like to hear about is your adventures. That is if I am not being too nosey. I love adventure stories.

Go Up Go Down

One early morning the sea was calm and flat something that we could spend month waiting for, when the sea was in such a good condition tractors, pumps, pipes, boats came out from everywhere everyone rushing to get into the water not wanting to waste any time at all.
As a diver my sole and only preoccupation was to get into my dive gear as all the equipment was taken care of by the rest of the team. Kelp was floating on the surface of the water indicating the rocky parts of the sea bed and also where the crayfish would be hiding.
While pipes and pumps would be put together I would take out the anchor with a pulley and rope just past the area that I would be working on to pull the 8 inch pipe to the site and on the way back to the shore I would collect a few crayfish for lunch.
Once the pipe was in position the pump driven by a tractor would be started and collection of material could begin it's way to the rotating sieve composed of three different grid size for sorting the small, medium and large stones, under normal circumstances a diver would stay two hours then get pulled back to the shore by the airline to be relieved by a second diver who in turn would do two hours of mining.
Visibility was at most times poor in these waters and under water currents strong but on this particular day the visibility was a few meters and currents mild. I was on a great spot the material looked very good with shiny blacks, fossils and olivine, the diver that was supposed to relive me had little experience so I decided that I was going to stay for a few more hours, I took my airline and wrapped it around a large bolder preventing the team from puling me in to shore, after some time I gave a signal of three bells to signal that they must pull me in.
I reached the shore and was helped to my feet and the harness was removed, it was now time for me to take a well deserved break but before I could do that I had to brief the other diver, a few minutes later he was on his way, and I could start to relax, I was looking at the bags of material that were placed side by side when the owner of the concession told me that they wanted to pull me in because a large shark was spotted in the water in the same area that I was working in and did I see it, no I replied as I was too busy having a great time but had I seen it what would it have changed? He has bigger teeth than me and he swims a hell of a lot faster than me.
Well till this day I do not know what type of shark it was nor how big he was in fact I don't even know if it was a shark at all.  Cool

WOW! Sounds like an episode right out of "Deep Sea Gold". Was the diamond haul bigger that day?
