To be fair it does say hobbists dont need a permit, but how they define hobbyist will determine the amount of headaches they have created. And it will now be open to large commercial interests as well.  Angry

More and more the rangers and parks people are takeing to the thought that they own the land and they are the only ones ho can do the right things there....

Two major notes here     limit is 10lbs per year.... anthing over that and it isn't a keeper....
you can't sell or prfit from these meteors.... unless you have a commercial permit.....

As far as Im concerned those metal rocks are going to be found and kept incognito as far as origin is concerned..... People hunt for them to sell them mostly....
Oh  National Parks, Federal Lands are not covered by this  they have their own rules....

What happens if you chance upon a huge meteor.... Say 1/2 ton or so....  guess they say you have to walk on by.... yeah right....

As much as I don't like this, I can live with this decision a lot more easily than I can with the ruling that stood in a lot of BLM managed areas -- NO Meteorite collecting .

 Embarrassed

No if you sell one and are not a commercial licensed hunter of BLM lands you are a criminal... Youll have to go to the big house and meet Bubba and his pals...

I never find anything on my BLM lands hunts.. It's a wasteland out there.....   Great

That's not exactly what the rules and regs say "Casually-collected meteorites are for personal use only, and may not be bartered or sold for commercial purposes."    The whole thing depends upon the interpretation of both "personal use" and "commercial purposes".  Nothing in the reg would prevent a legitimate meteorite hobbyist from picking up a dozen or so samples for his personal collection (assuming that he doesn't exceed the 10 pound/year limit or any of the other rules) and then at some point in the future trading one of those specimens to another hobbyist collector in order to expand his personal collection just as he might with duplicate mineral specimens or baseball cards.   You get into problems if you collect them with the intention of trading or selling them, especially with the purpose of making some sort of financial gain.
Admittedly, it is a very grey area, but the reg is aimed at "dealer-collectors" not at casual collectors who might belong to a Rock Collecting club and occasionally spontaneously swap or sell specimens to another before or after a meeting.  That being said, I can almost guarantee that if you post an advertisement anywhere saying you have meteorites for sale or trade you're going to get the attention of the Feds and the burden of proof will somehow get shifted to you to show that you didn't collect them for "commercial purposes"  (and your ad will most likely be entered as part of the evidence against you)
