TV Show "American Digger" Last nights episode,

Someone explain to me how a old milk can , can be buried in the ground for who know how many years and still be intact.

When Ive had one in the barn out of the weather at my uncles place for 30yrs and the bottom is rusted out of it and the paint is gone.

and the one they pulled out of the ground looked like it was brand new and still had the paint of it and was full of old coins etc.

Ok I am done ranting.

I tore off a porch on an old house from the late 1860s. The porch was elevated off the ground about 4 feet and the three sides were open to the elements...... and I found very good condition newspapers buried in the dirt that were 60+ years old. Still readable! Must have been the ph or something of the soil......

Well I got to agree with Karl on this one anywhere in Louisiana, Florida and along the Texas coast untreated metal has a very short life span. But have seen 100 year old tin cans in west Texas and New Mexico that look like they were yesterdays trash.

Thanks guys, MudFlap - this particular milk can was out in the open no shelter and like Seldom said metal in those area's usually don't last long.

Anyways thanks for letting me Rant.

LOL,

The salted fields of grain!
 Smiley

I like the show though, at least they do a decent job of showing research being done and going around & knocking on doors. I think many of the finds are real, with some drama big time finds for good vibes.

Karl I saw that Milk can with the copper penny's and $20 SG Gold Piece, and you guys are right but the guys were there not too long after that area was flooded out and began drying out only months later so I doubt it was buried in the NACL soil for long enough to rust but yes the can looked mint with no oxidation which was strange. I think from my ecology of coastal eastern seaboard regions, that its possible the salt content in the Bayou's ground isn't as high content or strength as it is in the sea water and they act as marsh lands with dirt & sand soil mixture.  That ground looked hard to me and fairly untouched when they broke that hole open, but hey we all know TV Magic can do anything visually, so I guess I'm with you guys on that and would say some of these finds are well who knows...

I still like the Show though alot & Rick Savage and his crew. I know a pro Wrestler in NC who knows Rick Savage from back in the day.

Boom Baby!
 Great
Jim

Maybe some of it is the metal or galvanizing... I have a milk can that has sat on my open on 2 sides breezeway (only heavy rain hits it) for over 35 years and is still in fair shape with a good bottom. I would think the dirt on the one you are talking about would make it rot much faster.
