The best thing about lists like these are that they remind me of some old stories I've read or bring up new ones to find out about.  Kiss

That is true, BA, the name El Dorado does refer the South American treasure legends.  But I have also seen "El Dorado" used many time in reference to the treasures sought by Coronado, et al..

I agree.....and some of the listed legends even serve to remind you that some of "legends" turn out to be true and ARE found (even when most people think they are nothing but myth---as in Schliemann's search for "mythical" Troy).   Sorry, I'm partial to that particular story since it is one of the stories I got wrapped up in while still in early grade school.   Yeah, I know a lot of Schliemann's story and claims turn out to be bogus, but the dedication to hunt based on the clues of a story that was widely considered pure myth AND to actually find a sizeable treasure definitely grabbed my young mind.   I'm also partial to the 1715 Treasure fleet and the stories of the folks that looked for it before it was found (and what still remains to be found).

BA

Smiley Hi i agree BA on the 1715 fleet treasure , just finished reading Kip Wagner's book Pieces of Eight . any one who thinks retrieving sunken treasure is easy once you find the wrecks ought to read his book it was more miss than hit , back in those days it was extremely difficult , but they did find remarkable treasure , also Mel Fisher was involved in this recovery which still goes on today , its still guessed there is 10's of millions yet to be recovered . cheers Mick Detecting

SO sad how much history was lost in conflict of WWII, I guess the same as Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. The old addage to victor goes the spoils. Now its tot he looters.
