Go Up Go Down

I found a couple 1850's Gold Rush artifacts recently.  I have found other little devices to hang things on like the one on the left and have then hanging around our home with items dangling from the little hooks.
I love the old hand wrought nails and use them to hang item on walls.  You can hardly tell the difference from a Celtic nail from an early American hand made nail.  Some blacksmith person made each nail in much the same way I suppose.
I cleaned each relic with a wire brush, and then painted each with black water color. Finally I coated each with candle wax by holding a piece over a candle until hot.  Then I got the wax from the candle onto the piece and carefully worked the item around the candle getting hot wax on.
Some might not like this technique but I like it for small things.

The "correct" way of preserving old iron / metal objects is to soak them in linseed oil, clean them gently and then burn them with an open flame and let them cool of in the same oil again.
It will create a black protective surface, this method was used before stainless steel was around.

But please beware, the rags used in the rubbing and cleaning will self ignite if exposed to heat, therefore burn them immediately or store in airtight plastic bags in metal containers.

Still quite common in blacksmith work in the nordic parts of Europe. Smiley

Well thank you for the info, I normally just wax mine.

All the best

Just one thin do you use raw or cooked linseed oil?
