Go Up Go Down

Hello from a sunny Durban, South Africa,
I should think that this topic has been covered before. I would like advice on cleaning coins that have been corroded by sea water.
Regards,
scoutcommander

Hello from France.

Only a few words, depending on the coin value:
- tumbler
- electrolysis
- baking soda

Using site search engine with these words will be a great help, everything is explained.

Good reading !

regards,
Oli

I have best luck on modern type coins by using a tumbler, with aquarium rocks and some detergent, sometimes on badly corroded it may take a couple days or more, on ocean coin finds, good or rare coins are a different matter tho, some i use baking soda, some, electrolisis, just kinda depends=good luck ahd Happy Hunting Detecting

This is a method I came up with on my own that works outstandingly, if you are not cleaning a coin that doing so would reduce the value. Teach
This works FAR better than tumbling, since that will reduce detail greatly.(for silver)

Alternate heat, Naval Jelly(while hot), rinse heat, etc.
Only heat to the point of just getting dark red.(slowly-propane torch)
Ventilate fumes.

I took a 1926 silver dollar that had a heavy black stain on the face and completely removed all the black and left the coin with a satin, off white finish.
VERY little surface material was removed in the process.  Great

Silver coins found in salt water, First boil them in Distilled water for a hour or so.

This eliminates the salt impregnated in the silver and silver sulfides. (Blue Stuff)

Follow this video minus the Salt additive.  Yes Baking Soda is a Salt but not as Corrosive as Table Salt.

Now Boil the coin in Distilled Water yet again.

Dry and Keep it out of Ultraviolet Light like the sun or fluorescent lights.

Have a good day!

In reading several ways on the internet to clean coins....alot of um said the frist thing to do is NOT to clean them and repeat step one? Guess it all depends on the coin?

That's written by the collector, and especially by the American collectors.   IF a coin has significant value on the collectors market, you definitely do not want to clean it.   On the other hand, if it is a common date coin in a less valuable condition so that you're planning either selling it to the bank (or coinstar) or selling it for melt value, there is no reason NOT to clean it.
