Dose anyone have any good ways of cleaning coins? I leave my silver coins in olive oil for six months and they come up like new. Smiley

Aluminium cooking foil on silver coins.
Wet a small piece with ..... err.... spit... Shocked
Gently rub the coin.
It's a kind of gentle electrolysis apparently.... works though!

Hi Thanks Paul, I will give that a try sounds like a good idea. Soaking then for 6 months is so slow. I have a lot of coins that I have found and I like to see them looking good and cared for. When I get some spare time I will try to have a chat with you, You sound like an interesting person. It is almost midnight here. Thanks Ken

Will olive oil work on metals besides silver?

The olive oil is used to soften the dirt so it will work on any metal. It's selected because it doesn't hurt the coin. It's not reactive to metal in any way so any staining will remain but the dirt is usually ready to wash off with soapy water.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks for the info I will have to try that. I wonder if you could do electroylsis in olive oil?
New thought I had is how old and or bad were these coins in the first place? I like to collect ancient roman coins so 6 months may not be enough time for me.
