No, salt is sodium chloride. I used hot water and sodium carbonate, a base solution.

Would it be wise to clean a 1856 large cent peice with the sodium method? Will it bring down the value or hurt it?

Like outback says, don't mess around with any artifact of value. My wife holds all the good stuff so I can't tinker around with it. Grin If you look at the potato pic you can see that even it removed a little copper from the coin.

Yeah, my father said that my coin had alittle of its copper come off on the potatoe. I just was wondering so I did not harm the coin, thanks for info.
