The best I have found is using an aluminum container, sodium carbonate and hot water. It is also one of the safest.

1. Put a paper towel on the bottom of an aluminum container.
2. Lay coins on paper towel.
3. Boil water in a class vessel, I use a large Pyrex measuring cup.
4. Add sodium carbonate to the hot water until saturated, can hold no more.
5. Pour the hot water with dissolved sodium carbonate over coins.
6. You can flip the coins if needed with plastic, glass or wood.
7. Remove when desired cleaning has taken place or when the fizzing stops.
8. Rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.
The gas given off is hydrogen, a small amount.
The black on the aluminum is hydrogen sulfide, nasty in large quantities.
All the crude on the towel is the stuff that came off the coins.

A source for sodium carbonate is a swimming pool supplies store, or other store that carries pool supplies. It is used to increase the pH of pool water.

I have used it with silver, gold, copper, clad all with good results.
Do not mix coin types, do batches of each kind; gold, silver, clad, copper.

(Disclaimer; experimental use at your own risk, this is not advise. Danger hot water is hot, don't lick/eat or consume the black hydrogen sulfide, do in a vented area away from sparks or open flames hydrogen burns and is explosive, wear protective gloves, do not let skin come in contact with sodium carbonate, do not breath or snort any sodium carbonate, shield eyes, have adult supervision, try on low value coins first, dispose of residue safely.)

The cleaning method works really well. Worth the trip to get some sodium carbonate. Seems to work well with any metal except iron. Had a little fun with the disclaimer, mostly cut and paste with some changes.

Never tried the potato method. Here is a wheatie I found last fall that has not been cleaned yet. I'll put it in a potato after I post this. Then after a few days I'll post the results. Smiley

Yeah, my coin has some dirt on it, and corrosion. I've put it in the potatoe about three or two hours ago.

Popped mine out for a look. Definitely cleaning up, even after that short while. I'll have another look tomorrow.
