Go Up Go Down

I purchased a Very Nice quality Stone Mountain Commemorative half dollar today. Really amazing!
BUT, the coin was glued to felt in a display case! The felt is gone, the glue is not, some sort of epoxy I guess, it is very hard, although I was able to cut the top layer of glue with a knife, maybe hot glue?

I would like to know if anyone can think of anything that will not mess up the numismatic value too much? Thank you in advance

Try Acetone Dave if you don't have any nail polish remover is acetone with a little oil will work the same.

Seldom beat me to this one.

Family Dollar stores, Wally World sell it too.  Try the NO acetone version of Nail Polish remover.   I had a pile of Mexican Pesos that had some funky green glue on the backs of them...  Soak for a day in a small baby food jar and the first time I gave it a shake the gunk all fell off.

Goo-Gone also works to remove glue and is made from oranges. It is also at Wally World, seems like they carry everything except for metal detecting stuff. I have emailed them about it though. HH     Warren

Think they are safe enough? I hope they work. The previous owner had a nice coin but gluing it to the felt was a terrible Idea!!!

I have seen metal detectors at the walmart here, do not remember seeing one lately though!

Hot glue can be removed easily if you pop the coin in your freezer. You can flick it off with your fingernail.

Acetone will not dissolve epoxy but vinegar will soften it so you can remove it with your fingernail. Vinegar will mildly tarnish a silver coin though. Gives it a dull luster which can be buffed shiny again with a soft cotton cloth.

A freezer will also make epoxy very brittle and you may be able to remove it with an orange stick. Those are used by manicurists and most pharmacy stores have them. An orange stick is made from the orange tree and, along the grain, is one of the strongest wood picks made.

Aliphatic resins (white glue or wood glue) can be soaked off in water.

Super Glue can be removed with acetone or fingernail polish remover.

Rubber cement or contact cement can be rubbed off with your thumb. Be patient.
