I use the most simple method which is simply giving them a good overnight soaking in some soapy water. Purchase a set of bottle cleaning brushes and have at it. Sometimes another extra soaking will be needed. There are other ways I've heard of such as chemicals like lime and calcium removers. The ultimate would be having the bottle tumbled in a bottle tumbler. You can find a set of bottle brushes online. This is just an amateurs opinion but it works well for me!

Thanks.....from the looks of your bottles, it must work pretty well.

I've seen bottle tumbling mentioned in a couple of other posts by other members, but the idea of giving my bottles the same treatment I give rocks and coins kind of gives me the willies.  (obviously I'm missing something somewhere when it comes to bottle tumbling).

bottle tumbling

I have heard that but not going to try it. A little table salt water and a few old marbles helps get out hard stains

so, are you saying that as long as I get the dirt off, that flashy desert patina that I personally like is a good thing?   (sort of looks like a dried soap film with all the subtle rainbow hues)

That's what people want, I got 15 or 20 bottles I brought back from Corpus last month laying out in the sun now. Just rinsed the dirt off and let them dry. In fact now that you reminded me guess I need to take them to the shop. Remember that aspirin bottle you found a couple weeks ago, sold one like it for 9 buck Sat.
If you going to sale this stuff you got to give what they want.

Bottles left in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time (years and years), will change from to clear to an amethyst tint. This color is called sun-colored amethyst is quite attractive. Newer bottles will never change the older ones had ---------- in them sorry forgot will have to go look it up. And before one of my buddy's chime in yes its old age.
