Go Up Go Down

After reading through the other threads I'm a little confused about how to clean my recent find. It is about the size of a U.S. quarter. It is completely covered in rusty globs. I do not know if it's modern (within last 50 years or so) or older. The area it was found in could mean it's much older. I have tried soap water and toothbrush and it doesn't do much. I don't want to use toothpaste, tumbler, etc. because if it is really old I don't want to jeopardize value. How do I safely remove enough of the outer crust to see what it is? Thanks  Smiley

Thanks homefire but that process describes cleaning non valuable coins. Say my coin is worth lot's of money but ordinary soapy water won't clean it, what shall I do? I do not know if this coin is valuable or not and don't want to harm it if it is. For all I know it could be a token but not sure. Whats the safest way to clean gunk off a valuable coin besides soapy water without harming its value? I will try and post a pic in the comings days. The coin is covered with rusty material that allows none of it's markings to be seen.

Cache, I was wondering about that, thinking that maybe coins don't get this rusty. I am new to treasure hunting and just go on this site to learn things and drool over other people finds. I don't even own a detector, not yet at least. I found this coin or whatever it is, while doing yard work. I guess I just got overly excited and thought that it was a coin, lol  Grin. Once I get my hands on a digital camera, lost mine a few months ago, I'll take some pics. Thanks seldom and homefire for your posts, and no I haven't tried white vinegar but I will look into that as well as hot hydrogen peroxide and electrolysis. Have a good one!

I've seen coins pulled out of some areas with thick red gumbo soils where you'd swear the coins were steel because they looked so "rusty".
