Any ideas on this subject?  I have such item that is sealed shut around the edges and on the hinge on back of the box..also the front part is also sealed...

If it is brass, I would soak it in penatrating oil ( upside down) for a few days..then use a little heat around the edge and hinge ( not much) then run an ice cube around the edge..do it a couple of times as it may free it up.

i'd squirt it w/gunk then bang it off the table on all surfaces of the box just hard enough not to deform it then squirt & bang~then squirt & bang till some daylight starts to show~then i'd hit the exposed hardware w/brass dremel wheel~&squirt some more gunk & .... Grin

Got it open ..with quick shot of electrolosis  !!!   sorry to say nothing inside but hardened face powder and a deteriorated puff applicator.. sure was heavy tho...found out its from the 1940s ..not early 1900s like I thought..got an offer of $150 for it from a collector ..it is gone now !! thanx for the comments.
