I've read a little bit on this, but from the various articles I've read there are several different opinions. Say for example I find a Morgan Dollar.. ok, realistically say something like a silver dime. When cleaning silver coins (something buried in the ground for a while), then cleaning will be composed of what? I've heard just rubbing your fingers against it with warm soapy water, then rinsing with hot water, I've heard of lemon baths, acid baths and many have said DON'T ever use the silver polish. So... what's recommended here?
Thanks!

P.S. Oh, I thought the FAQ forum was the right place for this, is it? Or, should this be moved elsewhere?

BEFORE you clean it, check the coin's value.  You don't want to do anything that is going to lower the value of a quality coin---and that includes most cleaning (beyond a soak in warm water and a gentle blotting of the water from the surface).

(btw, all the moderators ask is that you try to put a post where it most makes sense.  If we think it fits better somewhere else, one of us will move it.  A lot of times it is a real close call between two places.  In that case we try to put it in the place we think most people would check first in the future.)

I've aquired several coins (about 50-100) which many were in air-tites. These were from a house fire many years ago, and lots of the air-tites got destroyed, even melted!! Sad
So, I'll try to attack a couple pictures here... I've got a lot in the warm soap bath. How long to I keep them in there? On the others, I just rinsed off the old ashes and they are still in their air-tites which many appear to have a lot of abuse/environment issues - green coloration, etc.
I read that you can get these off by just applying a kitchen knife right at the seam where they close, and that pops them open, so I'll try that. However, many are already popped open, and the coin's stuck in 1/2 of it! So, I've also got this problem with those that are in 'stuck' position?? What do I do there.

So, on cleaning - what next? Lots of various denominations too.
Thanks

keep yourself familiar with coins that might have value by having a handy red book. everyone has the temptation to clean things to bring out the beauty, but the seasoned ones know better.

OK, thanks do you have the full title & author of that 'red book' you referred to? Or can someone share that with me please? Thanks.
I would assume Amazon has them for sale, but is there somewhere else that has them for less?
Is it "A Guide Book of United States Coins: The Official Redbook, 63rd Edition - 2010" by Kenneth Bressett?
OK, I also just found a listing on Amazon for the 'bluebook' as well. This is in paperback. I'd guess their values are similar? Has anyone compared the two?

It is my understanding that the values quoted in the Red Book are general retail while those in the Blue Book are general wholesale.

hi, yes there usually around $10. blue is for dealers, red is for collectors. usually i use a book for 2 years, values dont really rise that much. you should definately have a red book and get the spirial binding-very important. i have been a collector for many years, ever need a question on value answered, drop me a line i can give you a good ball park if not exact price to sell.

You can try using some dry ice! Lay the holder directly on the dry ice.
Use a spoon or any thing else to move your specimen.
Do not touch the dry ice with your fingers or your hands.
The dry ice will em-brittle the plastic and you may be able to
just use a piece of wood and with a little pressure, crack the plastic.
Lay the holder, with coin inside, on a flat piece of wood and slowly
use increasing pressure around the parameter of the holder till the holder cracks!!!! Be careful not to strike the coin itself.
I have used this method to free up some coins I purchased from a similar incident.

I missed that question about removing plastic. Read the attached file.

If only that easy.  Same coin, different soil, moisture - resists cleaning the same way and certainly does not give same results.  Test small corner.
