Yep! image would be good.    It may be a coin, it may not, it may be a funky coin. Tongue

It seems your worried about messing it up, but it sounds like your too late on that one.

Ive had a few old Indian heads with heavy green oxidation on them, i would put them in a jar with Olive oil and let them soak for days, then just brush them with an old tooth brush, and they would clean up some but still have that green patina on them. You may have a 1943 steel penny there, i have a few in my collection, but never found one in the ground.....DW

Thanks all, it's about the size of a U.S. quarter, slightly larger, so I don't think it would be a 1943 steel penny unfortunately. Also, although really hard to tell because of all the gunk, it appears to be slightly thinner than a quarter. I will try and get my hands on a camera tonight and post a pic.

If it's that rusted up the damage is done.  Just get it to the point you can tell what it was! Cool

I'm with homefire on that one...Once you remove the crud whatever is under the crud will
vanish right along with it...Sorry but I've been their and the results were not good.
Should you figure it out be sure and let us know..

I join with the rest of them.....get the crud off.  The damage to the value has probably already been done.  Just looking at the size next to the quarter, I'd say that if it is an American coin, it is probably a large cent.  But the odds are it is either a token or a foreign coin.
