I don't know if this has ever been covered but can you do electrolysis cleaning on iron if it also has brass inlaid in it? I know the cleaning will preserve the iron but will it damage the Brass?

Iron is more reactive than brass. The brass should be fine.

I'd keep a close eye on it. Ive done it with more than one metal in the same piece before, but dont ever do a plated item. Unless you want to "unplate it". Because of the different metal, you'll need out change out your water frequently....otherwise you'll stain one or both metals beyond just polishing off.

Electrolysis is not plating, it's the opposite. Unplating is what is happening and there should be no damage to the brass.

I should mention here that your choice of electrolyte might do some corrosive damage. Use a weak solution of salt and water and you should be fine.

Are you certain it's bronze? It shouldn't matter about the cleaning method but my recollection tells me that bronze gets coated with a red oxidation layer while brass is slightly green in its oxidation.

Notice how I used both "it's" and "its" here? And properly, too! Whoohoo!

it may be brass after all then as there is a green tinge (spelling???). I will have to google the difference in the two metal, I think brass is copper and tin and bronze is copper and lead, but don't quote me on that.

Huh? I said.............but dont ever do a plated item. Unless you want to "unplate it".   I better stick to the item were talking about.  Grin  yep brass turns green like  copper.  Did I spelt that rite? Anyway.......I dont do much iron, but I change out my water often to help with the final cleanup of the piece. Especially if there is more than one type of metal in the solution. I'm not sure about that piece but different metals can stain each other. Copper can turn other metals pink. And its a bear to remove.....tumble some penny's with some nickles and see.  Grin
