Yes , Water 2 gal.  Then Acid and Bleach.  One Once Each.  Don't sound like much but it works over time.

It takes a Long time but dose not pit the Iron so much.

You have a Halide Electrolytic solution that slow but sure.

It may take a week or so at less then a half amp at 12 volts DC.

Slow is Good Some times.

Using something similar to this system to purify gold, do you have to use acid like aqua regia or will this work. I have been thinking about getting a Shor system

but really don't want to mess with acids if I can refrain. Also, the major other way I know of is with high heat, that I hope to not have to use.

I use Halide Leach to dissolve Gold fingers from PC boards.

Then you use a Much higher Strength.

Electroplating is  the best method to remove rust from the coins. But it is quite expensive and tacky to use.

Electrolysis, not electroplating. The latter would damage a coin permanently making it worthless.

I'm sure that's what you meant.

I don't know, GD, rust-free and "tacky" (especially the tacky part) definitely accurately describes every gold-plated coin I've ever seen (see attached example hijacked from the 'net)....although you're also right about it destroying the value except to a kitsch collector.

Electrolysis treatment is the exact opposite of electroplating. In the former, the electrons travel from the coin to a sacrificial piece of metal and in the latter, the metal is the plating source which, by electron flow again in reverse, is plated onto the metal object. If you had severe rust to deal iwth, only the very cleanest parts would get plated and the rust would still be there under any stray molecules that might attach themselves temporarily.

The flow of electrons in electrolysis is from the coin to the sacrificial anode. In plating, the flow is from the source metal to the object being plated. The processes are polar opposites to each other both in practice and in their electrical method of operation.

That is just a Mild Acid solution.    A pile of ways to do that one.

Deep Rust, Iron Oxide need serious work.
