How do you clean off bad rust?

I have found alot of really rusty items on the beach and out in the swamps. I really have no idea what they are because of them being covered in rust. Some items are really small and some look like old nails. I have tried CLR and baking soda but no results. Is their something out there that can be bought that would completely remove the rust? I'm kind of new to this whole restoring thing so I'm really clueless. Shawn

I use one part Vinegar and three parts water, let it soak for 3 or 4 days and rinse with a strong hose and its all gone...

That's an interesting way capn. :) Phosphoric acid will eat up rust and leave the iron also. "Etch Prep" is a common solution of Phosphoric acid used in the automotive industry to remove all trace of rust prior to painting, avilible at your local hardware store. Although I have used it clean up a pair of badly corroded pliers, buiried for a number of years, the disolved rust left craters in the metal. However I could open and close them again. I actually forgot them in the solution for a weekend. Not sure just when they were rust free!
Soak your parts in Coka Cola for days for the same effect ;)

I still like Electrolysis.
Baking soda and a cheap Battery charger can do wonders.
Trick is Timing.
You have to end it before damage is done and get the salt out of the Project before Preserving it.
On Iron Another good Solution is 1 oz Muriatic Acid , 1 0z 3% Clorox Bleach in two gal of distilled water.
Add Acid first.

Sorry, that wasn't completely clear to me. Put the water in the container first, then add acid, then bleach is what I think homefire meant. Forgive me, if it's just me, lol.
