Are you certain it is mother of pearl? It may be opal which can look quite similar.

Better have a jeweler look at it. When you said a piece came off, that sounds more like opal.

clean it gently with either a soft dry cloth or a very mild solution of soap and water.
Allow the jewelry to dry completely before storing.
Do not use an abrasive cleaner that can wear off the nacre.
Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner because it will also deteriorate the surface.

If opal it can be cleaned pretty much the same way ,,If your unsure about cleaning it your self take it to a jeweler

If only you have seen it but don't know what it is, how can you assume this? Take it to a jeweler or risk damaging it further.

Opal is considered semi-precious. I'd be more surprised to see it set in gold. Mother of pearl? Used as a backing for an inlay mostly. I've never seen it used in a setting by itself. That's why I questioned the original poster and suggested he speak with a jeweler.
