Mother of pearl is basically calcium  and susceptible to acid damage, so if it was real pearl.... its had it, sorry. However, I have seen shells that have been in seawater for uncountable years... so I have assumed it may not be real pearl. Comprende?

More and more it sounds like it is opal. Mother of pearl would not be damaged in water but opal needs to be stored in oil.

Oil? First time I ever heard that. Common opal, in Washington and BC gets stored in water or it loses its opal quality and is just a brown rock. Oil could work, so might glycerine/glycerol, which has a vapour point around 300 Deg F.

I dont say it doesnt work, just that its new to me.

Opal mines abound down under. They always ship them in vials of oil to keep them from deteriorating. I found a lovely opal ring a long time ago in sandy soil. It fell apart almost instantly. I replaced it with a faceted garnet. My daughter still wears it. I wasn't even tempted to restore it with opal. Too much bother.

GoldDigger1950;

I will have to remember the oil trick... I used to have a big piece of Washington brown opal, about 1.5 inch square... very dull, as it was dried out. I have not seen that stone in 20 yrs but it must be around. I have to find it and try that.
